This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
